A superb short break in this fascinating 'city on the sea' with its unique history and ambience. Your holiday base is a comfortable hotel located near the picturesque Vieux Port and stay includes boat trips and escorted excursions for you to discover this fascinating part of Provence and the Mediterranean coast.
Marseille is the oldest city in France founded by the Phoenicians 600 years BC then developed by the Romans as a trading post. Now a bustling metropolis, Marseille is packed with history and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Each of the different districts have their own distinctive character.
The vibrant Vieux Port , the largest pleasure yacht harbour in Europe is the jewel in Marseille's crown. In Le Panier, the oldest part of Marseille you will find Provençal pedestrian streets lined with multi-coloured buildings and pretty squares. The coast road, La Corniche has the smartest residences and belle epoque villas and great views of the open sea and Chateau d'If. Nestling below the Corniche the Vallon des Auffes, a small community of fishermen retains its old character.
As well as a bus tour of Marseille and a boat excursion, three escorted excursions are included during your stay visiting the picturesque fishing village of Cassis and the beautiful coastline of the Calanques, the lively university town of Aix en Provence and the medieval fortress village of Les Baux with its views across to the Camargue. However there is a choice of other trips further afield which you can add to your holiday if you wish.
