Marseille City Stay Itinerary
 Day by Day Itinerary  

The itinerary has been planned as a first day of Saturday and final night of Wednesday. We can arrange an alternative day of week to start your holiday but in this case the excursions available may change according to your choice of holiday dates.

This holiday can be taken at any time between the months of April to October.

Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4

Arrive in Marseille for your 5 nights stay in this lively Mediterranean city in a hotel right by the picturesque Vieux Port. After your arrival take a guided bus tour for an introduction to the sights of the city. The bus tour is a hop on/hop off tour so you can stop off and explore wherever you wish. A list of recommended stopping off points will be included in your Route Book.

This evening enjoy a stroll along the quais of the Vieux Port and maybe take an aperitif before dinner at one of the lively bars along the water front.

Early in the morning visit the fish market at the Vieux Port where the boats unload their catch and sell to the local people and restaurants. A taste of real Marseille life. Then take a self guided walking tour around the Vieux Port and lively squares nearby.

In the afternoon a boat trip along the coast departing from the Vieux Port taking you on an excursion around the magnificent bay and passing by the Isles Frioul and the prison island of Chateau d'If. Stop off if you wish and explore the islands en route.

This morning an escorted mini bus excursion along the cliff tops to the picturesque fishing village of Cassis with its pretty harbour. Your excursion includes a boat trip from Cassis to see the magnificent calanques (fjord like structures) for which this part of the coast is famous. The excursion departs at 9 a.m. and returns at 13.00 p.m.

Free afternoon in Marseille. Explore another part of the town maybe climbing up to the church of Notre Dame de la Garde for a magnificent view high across the town and the sea.

This morning an escorted mini bus excursion to the lively university town of Aix en Provence . Stroll the famous Cours Mirabeau with its pretty fountains and explore the lively old town centre. An opportunity to visit Cézanne's atelier, still full of the painter's presence. The excursion departs at 9 a.m. and returns at 13.00 p.m.

Free afternoon in Marseille. Time to explore the interesting artisanal shops selling local products - the delightful clay figurines (santons), the famous savon de Marseille and navettes (orange flavoured biscuits).
Day 5 Day 6    

An escorted mini bus excursion this morning to the medieval citadel village of Les Baux perched high in the Alpilles mountains with views across to the Camargue. Your excursion includes a visit to an olive farm with a tasting of the olive oil for which this part of Provence is famous. The excursion departs at 9 a.m. and returns at 13.00 p.m.

Depart this morning after breakfast.    

Our 5 night stay includes three half day excursions - Aix en Provence , the fishing village of Cassis including a boat trip to see the Calanques, the medieval village of Les Baux including a visit to a olive farm and olive oil tasting. The included excursions are by comfortable mini bus for 8 people. All are escorted by an English speaking driver/guide who collects you from and returns you to your hotel.

However there is a wide choice of excursion options to choose from which vary according to the time of year. Details of the most popular are listed below. You

may choose to substitute our included excursions for others or indeed add extra excursions. Please note, some excursions may incur a supplement to the holiday price. If we cannot offer your chosen excursions we will suggest alternatives and advise of any supplement which may be required.

We can also arrange private excursions by taxi if you have a particular place you wish to visit which is not included in the excursion options below. Just ask us for details.
Aix Aix

A half day tour visiting the delightful university city of Aix with its medieval Vielle Ville and beautiful Cours Mirabeau lined with plane trees and lively brasseries. Art history is of interest, Include a visit to C ézanne's atelier (entrance fee extra).

Les Baux Les Baux

The medieval fortress village of Les Baux is perched high in the Alpilles mountains with a view from the Citadel right across to the Camargue and Mediterranean beyond. This half day tour includes a visit to an olive oil farm and a tasting of the olive oil for which this area is famous.

Cassis Cassis

This half day tour visits the fjord like structures of the calanques for which this rocky coastline is famous on a boat trip from the picturesque fishing village of Cassis . Here the little harbour is surrounded with pastel coloured houses and restaurants.

Avignon Avignon

The medieval city of Avignon is full of treasures from the magnificent Papal Palace to the famous bridge on the River Rhone. Enjoy the lively Place de L'Horloge and take a walk in the gardens for a lovely view of the rooftops and river below. A half day tour.

ales, St Remy, Les Baux Arles

A whole day excursion visiting these highlights of southern Provence . The fascinating Roman town of Arles , charming St. Remy with its associations with Van Gogh and the medieval fortress village of Les Baux.

Perched Villages Roussillon

A whole day visiting the beautiful perched villages of the Parc Naturel du Luberon - all distinctively different and each offering a magnificent vista across the valley. You will visit stunning Gordes, picturesque Roussillon and atmospheric Oppède le Vieux nestling right into the Luberon mountain side.

The holiday described has been planned with hotel accommodation in the New Hotel Le Vieux Port, a comfortable 3* hotel right by the Vieux Port and ideally placed to explore the city with all the major sights just a short walk away. The hotel does not have a restaurant but there is a wide choice of restaurants and cafés nearby and we will include our recommendations in your Route Book. Accommodation is in a twin or double room with private facilities.

The final choice of hotel for your holiday is determined by availability according to your holiday dates. If we cannot secure accommodation in the New Hotel Le Vieux Port, we will advise you immediately and suggest an alternative, and advise any supplement which may be required. There are several good hotels in Marseille all of which we have personally selected.
